NBC HEROES Some spoilers – It begins Sept 25 at 9pm. See it Every Monday

I was watching the Heroes pilot for NBC on youtube and I thought it was a verys strong pilot. The first episode which is a longer than the traditional pilot starts of with a Doctor in India explaining what human beings are capable of. Then we begin to meet our heroes from a Nurse, down on her luck mother and child, to a teenage girl who wants to be normal, to a Japanese office worker who loves comics a paiter who paints the future while high to someone who wouldn’t of expected in the beginning. We get to meet the characters and learn about who they are and are given glimpses into their lives with hints of their hopes and dreams. The artist is introduced later and a later reveal is a little weak simply because we don’t get a chance to know him. The characters are linked together in various ways with many of them finding their way to NY where the series takes place and where the artst draws a picture of the a apocoplase. Hey you can’t have heroes with powers without some end of world tagging along for the ride.

I find it interesting that the solar eclipse seems to play a important role as some kind of catalyst for the show. If you look at the official logo the solar eclipse is prominently featured. I wonder what role it has and what it means to the story hmmm…. But either way it is a real cool effect.

This picture can be found at the 9th wonder site and in the show is a picture that Issac paints reflecting the eclipse.

Meet the Characters

Mohinder Suresh – A professor in India who discovers that his father a geneticist who lived in New York as a taxi driver looking for patient zero is dead. He believes it is because of his father’s wild theroies about people developing abilities.

Peter Petrelli – A 30 year old nurse for the ill who has dreams or premontions that he can fly and who hero worships his brother.

Nathan Petrelli – Is Peter’s older brother and is running for Congress. He is the alpha male. He is a shark and at the end of the first episode it is revealed that it is not Peter who can fly but Nathan.

Hiro Nakamura – A 24 year old guy that lives in Japan as an office worker and can manipulate time and can teleport. He is a geek and he knows about these types of powers from comic books and at the end of his sequence he teleports himself to New York. He tells his friend who mocks him but Hiro continues to test his new abilities until finds himself in New York city.

Issac Mendez – A 28 year old painter who can paint scenes of the future after getting high. We meet him late in the pilot whne his girlfriend comes to see him and he wants to go cold turkey but at the end he ends up cutting off his hand so he could paint a picture of NY is ruins. How does this happens and how will our hearoes deal with it this is where Heroes begins.

Simone Devere – 28 years old and is Issac’s girlfriend she comes in when Issac realizes that what he paints comes true in pictures and knows Peter because he takes care of a grandparent who is ill.

Claire Bennet – A 17 year old teenager knows she has this ability and has tested it every which way but wants to be normal. She is adOopted and her step father is inolved in someway with the conspiacy that killed Mohinder’s father.

Niki Sanders – IS a 30 year old mother who lives in Los Vegas and is a mother with a very intelligent young child. She borrowed money from the mob to pay for private school but the mob comes looking. The kid prepares to go she his dad in NY and Niki has been seeing a different her in her relection. When the mob catches up to her she blacks and wakes up having killed the mobsters.

Characters yet to appear but appear in episode two:

D.L. Hawkins – Is a 31-year-old inmate who can transport himself through walls and ends up on the outside of his prison one day gaining freedom and a whole new set of problems.

Matt Parkman – A cop and family man in New York who can hear other people’s thoughts. He hears the plan of a potential terrorist subject.

The pilot has an epic feel to it and I think that it has a lot of potential. It has a realistic tone but that will be hard to maintain over the course of the show because of the powers and the end of world storyline. I like the focus on the characters, that the audience. In a serialized drama it is all about the characters and how they adapt to changing circumstances. The relationships that the characters have are also very interesting. From Kyle who hero worships his brother Nathan to Niki who seems to have a dual identity that can take control in some ways like a person with multiple personality disorder. There is a lot more but I think I will leave that for the audience to discover. The Pilot is short since we don’t get a chance to meet all the characters in this episode and I wish they would of kept the 72 min version. I have heard that it was even better but I have high hopes for this show if it can stay grounded in reality and not spin out of control, which can often happen when doing stories like this.

HERE IS THE FIRST TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODE TITLED IN HIS OWN IMAGE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED

You can find the rest if you search YouTube and type in Heroes NBC.

This is a picture from James Hudnall’s blog and I thought it was such a great picture I needed to post it. It is so futureistic but it is something that exists right now. It is used for scientic discovery but boy does it look amazing.
