So the Emmy’s were on yesterday. I watched some of it and it was fun. I was happy that 24 cleaned up because it is about time they won and good for them. So here is the list The Office won and they deserve it. This upcoming season looks to kick the competition up a couple notches and will be very interesting to watch. There are a lot of good shows coming; I just hope that the best ones can survive. With the development of cable and satellite the diversification of media has made the major networks less relevant since you can find specialty channels for almost any topic. This has changed the landscape of modern media with YouTube accelerating that change even faster. I can watch everything from some walking their dog to a clip of 24 all on one site. This freedom is shifting and blurring the lines of what media is. When I saw a video of the war in Lebanon on you tube mentioned on CNN I realized that it was a shift in our perceptions of information and that anyone with a camera could participate in the new world of modern media.
We can all put up our own shows and interests for anyone to see. As the Internet’s demographic shifts and expands beyond the west to those who would most benefit from the ability to access such information. While the third world is least impacted and the most impacted by such technology, the Internet acts more like a symptom of larger issues. It is irrelevant to most third world counties simply because the focus in these poverty stricken areas is the basics. Once those basic necessities are fulfilled information and access take on more importance and I think that this pattern will persist in these developing counties.
In modern society we will continue to see the convergence of media from TV to radio and the Internet. Each is one aspect of a layered media landscape that allows for multiple deliver systems of information and entertainment content. From iTunes which sells music and video to amazon and e-retailers and e-mail and IM, technology is constantly changing how we interact with the media and information. I can’t wait to see where we go from hear and I hope that everyone including the developing world will be able to benefit from it.
