So it’s advertising week the Canadian edition. Funny we have ad week, marketing week and conferences up the yin yang you wonder how much people actually get out of these things. I bet for all the bluster 90% of it is all talk. Mostly these things just seem like an expensive way to network and raise a glass or several to the industry.I find that if you have been to a couple of these you hear the same thing over, over and over again. You see similar ads or the same ads that were at all the other awards. I take these things with a grain of salt and I wonder if you were to ask real people about ads what they remember and if they think it is great or just a necessary evil needed so they can get the content they want.

Mostly the awards seem self congratulatory and more like ways to generate awareness than anything else since there are so many of them. Let”s see if this year will bring anything different or we will have heard it all before. It may be interesting or not we will see.

Here is the deal I am not a writer by trade and I have no clue how to construct a story although I am reading about it so the plan is for me to write characters in different situations. Then take them and have scenes with other characters and start building voices, personalities and views. They will not be real characters at first but this way I can play with scenes and settings and start building a dialog within the structure. Will these scenes be used it may happen, will they be created specifically for the screenplay I want to write this moment maybe not. I don’t know but I think this is a good way for me to take the pressure off of writing a story and hopefully over time the characters themselves will help me do the same.

I just thought this was cool. It is for Diesel and it is there campaign. I can’t tell you how many stupid ideas have in a day probably way too many to mention but many a time those stupid incidents are the ones that get the laughs, they are what you remember. I like the video but I can see how a campaign like this would be very specific and if you are not in that demo it will be crass to many. My guess that is the entire point it really isn’t about stupidity as much as it is about take risks and not always waiting or analyzing things but just going out and doing it and that is something that I think many of us need. I know I do and now I think I gotta go out and do it.

So I created a world well I actually did 2 years ago and then put it aside because I got busy but the ideas are still coming but figuring out how to introduce this universe is hard as hell because you can literally do it ten ways from Sunday. I have been hitting my head against that wall for the last few days and it is driving me nuts.

Here is the deal I want to get into advertising but unluckily for me I am a guy and to get into account management that makes things a little harder lets just say. There are jobs but I don’t see any since it can be so random at times. Anyways so I decided since I have time to kill that I was going to work on this idea I had because the second I find work I will not have the time to commit to it.

Let’s get this straight I am not the creative type and as a career not really into that but anyone who wants to be in the ad game has to be a storyteller and that’s just part of human nature. We all have a story to tell and are always the hero of our own adventure.

I am not sure how much of my idea to reveal in here but trying to figure out what the focus should be and knowing your world and the world of your characters is not easy. In a script or screenplay you don’t have the luxury of using words to get you through it because it is so visual, it’s as much about subtext and reading between the lines as anything else.

So should my character be driven to a specific goal or should be be reacting. Is it going to be internal or an external conflict and how should he react. How do I avoid cliches and make in feel like he is real. How do I use my setting to it’s maximum effect so that this story needs to be told here. How does he or she live their lives everyday from the mundane to the exciting. What is their background, the baggage they hold. Who are their friends, what kind of flick will this be if it were to be made?

Sooooo many questions and I don’t have any answers, where do I start, should I start with the concept, character, location?

I can literally go nuts trying to figure out what to do with all the ideas I have for it. It is sci-fi in content, no aliens or anything like that, I have no clue where to start. No matter who this person you are always writing about yourself or elements of yourself and maybe that is where I need to begin with this.
