Mission: Contract Freedom (From my Phone)

So starting a new part-time gig I find myself in need of a smartphone. I have a Blackberry 8900 but that has been looking a look in the tooth the past few months and with Blackberry 6.0 fast approaching it is looking older than ever. I had the chance to try out an older Android phone and I really liked what I saw. I was also thinking about getting an iPhone 4 but the lock in and monthly cost really give me pause.

What I really like about the Android ecosystem is that it is evolving so fast. I think that Android is playing catch up to the maturity of Apple’s iOS. Combine this with Apple’s renoun for creating products that just work has made them the star they have become in the last decade.

Mobile will become the smartphone. It is happening but it will take a while before the dumb phone dies. I was amazed when I could check my twitter, e-mail and whatever else at the same time. The keyboard let a lot to be desired but I quickly got the hang of it. Now that I have tried a touch based smartphone I don’t think this old school Android would be enough. I have a feeling that I would quickly run into the limitations and that would limit my appreciation for the device as it seems every month a new Droid is released.

I do want the iPhone but not enough to get one under contract and I know that the with the plans available I would be better off paying for the phone outright rather than save on the device to pay more on the contract.

I am not sure what kind of user I would be but I have a feeling I would be a moderate user of any phone. At this point I have only e-mail on my phone which has limited me from experiencing all that a Blackberry has to offer and I can’t change it without paying a penalty.

So my mission is to get a new phone and escape contract purgatory and never go back, that is worth the effort and owning whatever smartphone I get from the outset.
