A Zelda Musical – OMG So Awesome

OK just watch this Zelda musical on YouTube. If you ever played a Zelda game this will make you smile and give the nearest nerd or geek a fist pump.

To the Sky and Back again with Skyward Sword

I am so looking forward to The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword for the Wii. I remember that the Ocarina of Time (OOT) was one of my favourite games I ever played. The recent games in the Zelda series have taken their cue off the OOT template ever since. That game by itself helped to create the foundation all adventure games would follow-up to today. Skyward Sword seems to reimagine what Zelda can be with a blurring of the lines between dungeon and the overworld. The ability for the wiimote + to accurately track your movements for 1 to 1 motion control. I really like the art style which is expressive and has the water-colour feel and is a perfect style for the Wii and the limitations of the hardware.

I can’t wait for this game it can definitely be considered a swan song game for the Wii as we head off to Wii U next year. This is a great 6 minute trailer for the game but beware there are some spoilers below. I love this time of year as a gamer, it ROCKS!

The Legend of Zelda Celebrates 25 Years

I remember the first real epic game I ever played was The Legend of Zelda The Ocarina of Time. I was still just a kid when I first played the game and I loved seeing (at the time) the beginning of Links story. This legend is officially 25 years old this year and they are holding a few symphonies to celebrate and here is a video that someone posted from the Los Angeles concert from October 21st. This is from The Wind Waker game which was such a joy to see if only because it had a childlike wonder that you can feel from this piece.

Bonus Round Grades #Nintendo

Here is a bit on the gaming landscape as it stands this year. The Bonus Round always has great commentators and this is no different. My first gaming console was the NES way back when and I grew up with it so Nintendo has always been one of those companies where the level of nostalgia is high. With Apple making quick gains in the gaming space as a platform if not a developer and the erosion of the uniqueness of the Wii due to Xbox360′s Kinect and Sony’s Move and the upcoming launch of the 3DS early next year things are tough for a company who just a year or so ago was breaking sales records all across the world.

As a Japanese company the rise of the yen has hurt the company a lot more than the competition. I love the look of Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns brings back the memories but I wonder what their next move will be in the home console space. What will they do to continue to remain a force in gaming. They have the best IP in the business, a profit margin that most companies would kill for but are on a constant fight that repeats every few years and they have to start all over again. They will be first to market the next round of consoles but what form that will take is up in the air. Pachter thinks that iterating on what is out there already is enough but with Nintendo you never know.

That is why they are such a fascinating company to watch because they can be so unpredictable. I look forward to the next earthquake to hit the industry, I know Nintendo will be there one way or the other and that is half the battle right there.

#OMG A Great Nintendo Commercial for a Hardcore Game

I remember when I was a kid playing Super Metroid. That was one kick ass but frustrating as hell game for me. I can’t even recall if I ever finished it. It was sick, made me want to throw the controller at times but it had a feeling of calm dread. Now they have come up with Metroid: Other M that continues the story from Super Metroid and as a writer who has developed a passion for story and for world building this ad just made my day.
